Dirk Hartog's Historic Landfall in Western Australia (1616)

Perched high on the rugged sandstone sea cliffs of Shark Bay, Dutch sea captain Dirk Hartog in a tailored seventeenth-century voyager's coat and feathered hat hammers an inscribed pewter plate onto an upright wooden post. An apprentice sailor kneels beside him offering metal nails, while in the tranquil turquoise bay below, their three-masted wooden sailing vessel, the Eendracht, rests peacefully at anchor as graceful seagulls soar across the expansive maritime sky.

On October 25, 1616, Dutch navigator Dirk Hartog aboard the Dutch East India Company ship Eendracht made landfall on an uninhabited island off the western coast of Australia, marking the second recorded European landing on the Australian continent. Before resuming his voyage toward the Spice Islands, Hartog flattened a pewter dinner plate, chiseled the date and ship details into the metal, and nailed it to an oak post at Cape Inscription—creating the oldest known European artifact ever found on Australian soil.

Cassini Discovers Saturn's Two-Toned Moon Iapetus (1671)

On the open stone balustrade of the Paris Observatory beneath a sprawling expanse of twinkling star constellations, Italian-French astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini gazes upward through a long brass aerial telescope mounted on a tall wooden tripod. A nearby scholarly table holds an authentic celestial globe, parchment star charts, and feather quills, while a decorative circular astronomical diagram showcases Saturn surrounded by its magnificent rings and its enigmatic moon Iapetus displaying its stark contrasting light and dark hemispheres.

On October 25, 1671, astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini made a landmark celestial discovery when he observed a previously unknown moon orbiting Saturn, which he named Iapetus. Cassini soon noticed that Iapetus mysteriously vanished during half of its orbit, correctly deducing that the moon was tidally locked and had one hemisphere dramatically darker than the other—a Yin-and-Yang cosmic puzzle that NASA's Cassini spacecraft finally confirmed more than 330 years later.
