Global Friendship and Peace

Four smiling, cheerful young children holding hands stand in a joyful circle around a friendly, cartoon Earth globe with a warm smiling face. A bright smiling sun, puffy white clouds, and floating sparkle stars fill the sunny sky above rolling green hills, inviting toddlers to color the happy children and planet Earth with vibrant, cheerful crayons.

Officially established on October 24, 1945, United Nations Day celebrates global friendship, international peace, and cooperation among all nations. Created after the entry into force of the historic UN Charter, this special day encourages children and families around the world to practice kindness, celebrate diverse cultures, and work together to care for our shared home.

Discovery of Uranus's Moons Ariel & Umbriel (1851)

An intrepid young astronomer gazes through a grand Victorian brass telescope mounted on an open-air observatory balcony beneath a canopy of twinkling stars. Planet Uranus glows with faint, beautiful planetary rings as its two newly discovered moons, Ariel and Umbriel, shine brightly in orbit, inviting early learners to color the glowing cosmic world and distant starry constellations.

On October 24, 1851, English astronomer William Lassell made history when he discovered Ariel and Umbriel, two of the major moons orbiting the ice giant Uranus. Using a powerful reflecting telescope that he designed and built himself, Lassell expanded our understanding of the outer solar system, paving the way for future robotic spacecraft like NASA's Voyager 2 to photograph these distant frozen worlds.

First Transcontinental Telegraph: Coast-to-Coast Wire (1861) - Printable colouring sheet for Ages 7-8
age 7 8

Coast-to-Coast Wire (1861)

Sturdy construction crews erect tall wooden telegraph poles across the open grassy plains, stringing shimmering copper wire that stretches toward the distant horizon. In the foreground, an authentic brass Morse code telegraph key and sounder rest on a wooden operator's desk with curled paper message tape, ready to transmit instant messages across thousands of miles of wilderness.

On October 24, 1861, workers connected the final stretch of the first transcontinental telegraph line in Salt Lake City, Utah, linking the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States for the very first time. By transmitting electrical Morse code messages in minutes rather than weeks, this revolutionary telecommunications network instantly united the nation during the Civil War and brought an immediate end to the historic Pony Express horseback relay.

NASA Deep Space 1: Advanced Ion Propulsion (1998) - Printable colouring sheet for Ages 9-10

Advanced Ion Propulsion (1998)

NASA's Deep Space 1 robotic spacecraft glides through the dark cosmic void, propelled by a brilliant blue xenon ion thruster beam glowing from its engine nozzle. Two expansive solar array wings flank the octagonal spacecraft body, while scientific cameras point toward the heavily cratered surface of asteroid 9969 Braille as sweeping orbital trajectories and distant nebulae radiate in deep space.

Launched from Cape Canaveral on October 24, 1998, NASA's Deep Space 1 mission served as a pioneering testbed for 12 revolutionary space technologies, most notably solar electric ion propulsion and autonomous artificial intelligence navigation (AutoNav). By demonstrating that an ion engine could propel a probe efficiently across millions of miles, Deep Space 1 successfully flew past asteroid Braille and comet Borrelly, transforming modern deep space exploration.
