The Celestial 'Ring of Fire'

High in the daytime sky, the dark silhouette of the Moon covers the center of the brilliant Sun, leaving a dazzling golden ring of fire blazing around its dark rim. Telescopes and pinhole projectors on a mountain observatory view the rare celestial alignment against the darkened sky.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun while near its apogee (its farthest point from Earth). Because the Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun, it cannot completely block the solar disk, creating a magnificent luminous 'Ring of Fire' that allows astronomers to study solar mechanics and orbital geometry.
