First Images of the Far Side of the Moon (1959)

High above the lunar surface, a compact spherical space probe extends its scientific antenna and solar panels toward the stars. Beneath the probe, the unseen far side of the Moon glows in soft sunlight, showcasing mysterious jagged mountain rims and dark impact craters completely hidden from Earth's view.

On October 7, 1959, the Soviet Union's robotic space probe Luna 3 accomplished a monumental feat by transmitting the first photographs ever taken of the Moon's far side. Because tidal locking keeps the same side of the Moon facing Earth, humanity had never seen the reverse hemisphere until Luna 3 revealed its rugged, mountainous terrain to scientists around the globe.
